In 1774, Anza was nearly defeated by the formidable desert that surrounds Calexico today. Anza then returned in 1775 with 240 colonists and over 1000 livestock. Lack of water dictated a need to divide the expedition into 3 groups and send the cattle by another route.

Thursday, March 9 The conference kicks off with an evening reception at the conference hotel Best Western John Jay Inn, Calexico .
Friday, March 10 will feature an array of presentations throughout the day and an evening keynote address from Dr. Carlos Herrera, author of “Juan Bautista de Anza: The Kings Governor in New Mexico”. Dr. Hererra is the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at San Diego State University, Imperial Valley Campus and the Director of Borderlands Institute, SDSU.
Saturday, March 11 is a day long field trip that will take attendees near three of the historic expedition campsites on the way to Borrego Springs for a visit with local representatives at Anza Borrego Desert State Park.
